The 2014 Kentucky State Fair is just around the corner. If the entertainment, rides and food just aren’t enough for you, be sure to check out the special contests! Whether you have what it takes to compete, or you just want to watch from afar, the Kentucky State Fair has a contest that will interest you! This is your chance to see and showcase some of the best talent in the state of Kentucky.
Largest Pumpkin and Watermelon Contest
When big isn’t big enough? Last year’s winning pumpkin weighed a whopping 1,034 lb. Pumpkins weighing more than 1,000 pounds are eligible for this competition. Also, check out some of the biggest watermelon’s in the state in the new watermelon contest. Both contests held on the West Hall porch Friday, August 15 at 11:30 a.m.
Little Miss and Mister Kentucky County Fairs Pageant
Talented tots will get the chance to see who reigns supreme in the annual LittleMiss and Mister Kentucky County Fairs Pageant. Boys and girls ages 5-8 willcaptivate audiences with their sparkling grins as they stride across the stage.Contestants are all finalists of their local county fairs, meaning the competitionis sure to be fierce.The pageant begins Thursday, August 14 at 7:30 p.m.
The Mrs. Wyndall Smith Quilt Award Presentation
This special competition honors first-time quilters for their skillful stitching. A rosette and silver tray will be given in a ceremony for best “first quilt” on Friday, August 15 at 10:45 a.m.
Something to Crow About Rooster Crowing Contest
The rooster that crows the most in 15 minutes wins “Best Rooster.” “Something to Crow About” will be held daily, August 14-17. Daily winners will compete in the finals at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 17.
Coca-Cola Talent Classic
Refreshing as a Coke itself, the highly competitive annual contest gives teens ages 13-21 their chance for stardom. Sponsored by the Coca-Cola Refreshments USA.
Winners of the state-wide preliminary competitions will strut their stuff on the Talent Classic stage, competing in a variety of performances. Designed to give Kentucky youth a chance to shine, the Coca-Cola Talent Classic has successfully helped launch past competitor’s careers in entertainment. Nicole Scherzinger, lead vocalist of the popular girl-group the Pussycat Dolls and winner of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” snagged the runner up title in 1996.
Semi-finals will take place in front of a panel of qualified judges on Saturday, August16 and Sunday, August 17 and finals will be held on Saturday, August 23 at 7 p.m. in the South Wing B Room 104 for fairgoers to enjoy. For a complete schedule of events, visit www.kystatefair.org.
Dairy Cattle Parade of Champions
The Dairy Cattle Parade of Champions will flaunt the finest in dairy. The competition is Sunday, August 17 at 4:00 p.m. in the West Wing Show Ring. Picked from the breed champions, the Supreme Champion Dairy Cow will receive $1,000 and the Supreme Heifer will receive $500.
Kentucky Farm Bureau Federation Annual Gospel Quartet
Fairgoers can begin their day with the inspirational sounds of gospel at the Kentucky Farm Bureau Federation’s Annual Gospel Quartet Contest. The contest is at 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, August 21 on the South Wing C Select Kentuckiana Chevy Dealers and Family Stage. The winning quartet will move on to the National Gospel Quartet Contest and will perform at the Farm Bureau State Convention.
Kentucky State Fair Cheer & Dance Championship Presented by AmeriCheer
Cheer and dance teams will be vying for a first place trophy at the Kentucky State Fair Cheer & Dance Championship on Saturday, August 23. Registration deadline is August 8, 2014. The championship will take place in the South Wing Conference Center.
