One of the things that makes the Kentucky State Fair amazing is the variety of noteworthy food offered to fairgoers each year. Whether it be as a snack in the middle of the day or as a desert after dinner, you can never go wrong with ice cream at the Fair.
This will be the fourth year that Newton’s Homemade Ice Cream is sold at The Kentucky State Fair and the seventh year they have been in business. Newton’s Homemade Ice Cream is owned and operated by Ray and Marlene Newton with the help of their son Zac and new daughter-in-law Sarah. Other family and friends are hired to work special events like the Kentucky State Fair.
Residing in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Ray and Marlene were on vacation out West when they spotted a John Deere hit-and-miss engine making ice cream. Ray knew immediately he would soon have to get his own. “Marlene she said ‘you are crazy’, but long story short, I had a complete unit in less than 30 days and away we went,” Ray Newton explained.
Currently Newton’s Homemade Ice Cream offers six flavors: vanilla, chocolate, banana, strawberry, peach and pineapple. They are creating three brand new flavors: blackberry, blueberry and another new, exciting one just for the Fair! They say their ice cream stands out among the rest because of their secret recipe, local fresh grown fruit and artificial-free flavoring. “Nothing but the real deal,” said Ray. His personal favorite flavor is strawberry and the crowd’s favorite is banana.
Newton’s Homemade Ice Cream sells at the Kentucky State Fair and about three other festivals during the year. The Newtons also own two other businesses, Ray’s Trailer Sales and Marlene’s Merle Norman Cosmetics and Day Spa, both located in Elizabethtown. They also stay busy with their own farm and over 200 head of beef cattle.
Out of all of the venues they visit, they say the Kentucky State Fair is their favorite place to sell their ice cream. Ray has also been a member of Kentucky Proud for many years. Everything they use to make their ice cream is from Kentucky, including Udderly Kentucky Milk, as they like to keep it local.
People love Newton’s Homemade Ice Cream. It has been called the best in Kentucky by many! Come to the Kentucky State Fair August 20-30 and try Newton’s Homemade Ice cream.
